American Package Design Awards 2026
To celebrate the 2026 Lunar New Year and the Year of the Horse, Phillips created a limited-edition client packet inspired by the symbolism of energy, freedom, and progress associated with the Horse in the Chinese zodiac. The concept draws from xiangqi (Chinese chess), one of East Asia's oldest and most celebrated strategy games. Played across a board divided by a river and defended by opposing armies, xiangqi features the Horse (Ma) as one of its most versatile and influential pieces. Its distinctive movement encourages adaptability, strategic thinking, and bold action—qualities that closely reflect the spirit of the Year of the Horse. By merging the visual language of xiangqi with Lunar New Year traditions, the packaging reinterprets a familiar cultural symbol through a contemporary design lens. The result is a distinctive client gift that celebrates heritage while conveying momentum, optimism, and the possibilities of the year ahead.
