“Phillips Academy Andover undertook a strategic reimagining of its donor recognition societies as part of a broader institutional commitment to elevating stewardship at every level of philanthropy.”
Phillips Academy Andover undertook a strategic reimagining of its donor recognition societies as part of a broader institutional commitment to elevating stewardship at every level of philanthropy. The initiative sought not only to refresh the visual identity of each society, but also to create a cohesive family of sub-brands that would feel distinctly connected to the Academy while honoring the unique purpose and audience of each group. The resulting identity system draws deeply from Andover’s history, symbolism, and campus culture. The Advancement Communications team carefully explored institutional iconography—from the original Academy seal, created by Paul Revere in 1778, to beloved campus landmarks and traditions—to develop marks that resonate emotionally with the school’s alumni, families, and friends. Each society logo was thoughtfully crafted to reflect the spirit of its community: - Honey bees, reinterpreted from the historic Academy seal, symbolize the collective industriousness and shared impact of annual donors recognized through the Bulfinch Loyalty Society. - The “Non Sibi” sun, also drawn from the seal, represents the vision and inspiration embodied by the leadership-level annual donors who comprise the Non Sibi Circle. - The Thomas Cochran Society logo incorporates the iconic weathervane atop Cochran Chapel, honoring benefactor Thomas Cochran and reflecting the enduring generosity of donors whose lifetime giving exceeds $250,000. - The Samuel Phillips and Sarah Abbot Society identity features leaves inspired by the Great Elm, one of Andover’s most cherished symbols of longevity and legacy, an appropriate reference for the donors of this legacy giving society. Prior to the redesign, the societies lacked visual consistency and conceptual synergy, limiting their ability to reinforce the Academy’s philanthropic narrative. The refreshed system now brings the recognition societies into clear alignment with the wider Phillips Academy brand architecture while providing each group with a distinct and resonant identity.
