American Package Design Awards 2026
UMAMI SAUCE UMAMI SAUCE was created to help families around the world discover and enjoy Japanese flavors in their everyday lives. As a YouTube creator sharing Japanese home cooking, Brand Owner Moe began receiving messages from viewers around the world saying, “I want to cook Japanese food,” and “I wish I could recreate authentic Japanese flavors at home.” UMAMI SAUCE was developed in response to those requests. Inspired by traditional Japanese seasonings, the sauce was designed to be accessible to a wider audience by being Vegan, Gluten-Free, and Non-Alcoholic. The goal was to make Japanese flavors easier to share across different cultures, lifestyles, and dietary preferences. This philosophy became the foundation of the packaging design. The logo, illustrations, and many of the graphic elements were hand-drawn by Moe’s husband and Creative Director, Moto. The word “UMAMI,” now recognized globally as a Japanese culinary term, was illustrated in a way that feels both authentic and approachable. At the center of each label is a mother-and-daughter character, representing the family table that sits at the heart of the Kimono Mom brand. The packaging system was developed around three varieties—Original, Yuzu, and Spicy. Kimono Mom’s signature red serves as the foundation of the visual identity, while yellow distinguishes Yuzu and white with red chili accents identifies Spicy. This color architecture creates strong shelf recognition while allowing consumers to quickly differentiate between flavors. UMAMI SAUCE launched nationally at Whole Foods Market in 2024. To introduce the product to American consumers, Moe and her family relocated from Japan to the United States and spent a year traveling by RV through 40 states, conducting more than 100 in-store sampling demonstrations. That experience reinforced the importance of immediate shelf recognition and clear visual communication. Today, UMAMI SAUCE is available in more than 4,000 retail locations, primarily through premium grocery retailers including Whole Foods Market. Bold color blocking, hand-drawn typography, and a consistent visual identity help the product stand out while maintaining a warm and human-centered personality. UMAMI SAUCE is more than a seasoning. Through Japanese home cooking, it serves as a bridge that connects people, families, and cultures. If this packaging can serve as a welcoming gateway to Japanese home cooking and culture, then we consider that our greatest success.
