Health & Wellness Design Awards 2026
Project Title: JMA Pediatric Office Environmental Graphics and Signage Client: Jeffers, Mann & Artman Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, P.A. (JMA) Project Location: Rolesville, NC JMA Pediatrics, formerly known as Jeffers, Mann & Artman Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, is a regional pediatric practice with seven locations throughout the Triangle area in North Carolina. The practice provides comprehensive care across the full spectrum of a child’s physical, developmental, and emotional health. The Rolesville location is the newest facility in the network, where environmental graphics and signage were developed to support the practice’s commitment to a thoughtful, patient-centered experience. The design transforms the environment into an opportunity for discovery. Interactive wall graphics in both the sick and well waiting areas feature custom artwork and STEM-based content calibrated to appeal to a broad range of ages, from toddlers to teens and their parents. The graphics provide more than visual interest. They introduce moments of curiosity and distraction that redirect attention away from the anxiety and uncertainty often associated with doctor’s visits. Informational content gives children moments of exploration while also creating opportunities for conversation between patients and care teams. The STEM concept continues into each exam room, where every room has its own theme, character, and educational content. These distinct identities create memorable associations for patients while establishing a consistent visual language throughout the facility. The result is an environment that feels cohesive without becoming repetitive, giving children familiar points of reference as they move through their visit. Wayfinding is conceived as an extension of the experience. Exam rooms are organized into a simple and intuitive navigational system of color-coded pods or groupings. Although patients are personally guided to their exam room, the system allows them to participate in finding their destination’s color and room number. For younger children, each room’s unique graphic provides an alternative means of identification. In this way, navigation becomes an interaction rather than simply a functional requirement. The design recognizes that every touchpoint contributes to how a person experiences a place. By combining wayfinding, education, storytelling, and visual discovery, the practice moves beyond the expectations of a typical, clinical healthcare environment. The result is a place designed not only to function well, but to make the experience of visiting the doctor feel more approachable, purposeful, and human.
