Dell carrying case packaging was developed as a fiber-based system that rethinks packaging structure as the primary enabler of sustainability. Rather than substituting one material for another within a conventional packaging format, the design approach integrates structure, materials, and user experience into a unified solution. The result is packaging that supports straightforward packing and unpacking, performs reliably across global manufacturing and distribution systems, and promotes sustainability. Our work began with the assumption that packaging should be designed around the product it protects, not imposed upon it. Our packaging strategy embraces the inherent qualities of the product itself, allowing flexibility, compressibility, and softness to inform how the design is constructed and deconstructed. The system favors simplicity as both a sustainability and usability principle. It is composed of a single outer box and a minimal paper wrap that protects the product during transit while remaining easy to open, flatten, and recycle. Unlike the previous tuck-top form factor, which requires several pieces of adhesive tape, the new book-like box structure requires only one piece of tape to undo, unfolding completely in one gesture. Once the product is removed, the packaging is ready to be tossed. Material selection was guided by renewability, performance requirements, and the ability to be responsibly sourced at scale. The packaging eliminates plastics entirely, relying instead on fiber-based materials and FSC certified paper. The system supports mono material construction, reducing the need for separation at disposal and improving recyclability across regions. Performance testing played a critical role in validating our strategy. Fiber based materials were selected not only for their environmental credentials, but for their ability to protect the product throughout manufacturing, handling, and shipping. The book-like structure doesn’t only make unboxing easy, unique, and memorable, it allows for fiber-based product protection, which requires a softer touch during manufacturing and assembly than plastics. Sustainability is achieved through intentional design decisions rather than added components. Structure plays a critical role in enabling this approach. Packaging parts are standardized as much as product form factors permit. For example, our Dell Pro 13-14 Plus EcoLoop Backpack and Dell Pro 14-16 Plus EcoLoop Briefcase uses the same outer box. In the past, every carrying case had a unique solution, creating inefficiencies and inconsistencies. Our new focus on consistency supports a predictable experience across the portfolio, benefiting logistics efficiency and user understanding. Standardized sizing across programs and suppliers simplifies packing, stacking, and distribution while reinforcing a coherent visual and physical experience for the customer. Visual identity and sustainability were developed in parallel rather than sequentially. From the outset, ink usage and surface treatments were considered as part of the environmental footprint of the packaging. The hangtag uses aqueous coatings instead of polypropylene lamination, maintaining durability and visual clarity while remaining compatible with paper recycling streams. By controlling ink coverage, the design supports recyclability while preserving a consistent and recognizable visual language across Dell packaging. Ultimately, Dell carrying case packaging demonstrates how sustainability can be achieved through intentional design without compromise. By considering structure, materials, and experience from the outset, the system avoids incremental fixes and instead offers a simple, scalable solution. The result balances environmental responsibility with performance, usability, and brand integrity, proving that simple packaging can be both highly functional and sustainable.
