Mobility Speedometer Communication Tool & Poster Campaign

This hospital-based mobility initiative focuses on communicating about a patient’s mobility (movement) level and daily activity goals between the patient, their family, and the members of their care team. The initiative anchors around the Speedometer tool which is a laminated poster, placed in the patient’s hospital room, which includes an interactive arrow so the care team can adjust a patient’s mobility goal. Two versions of the Speedometer exist: one for ambulatory (walking) patients and one for patients who use wheelchairs. While the versions work in the same way, they offer different activity goals to better suit patient needs. The Speedometer tool has expanded to become a more inclusive toolkit of materials, including mobility posters to encourage participation in the initiative (featured), ‘mobility markers’ (posters placed at intervals in hospital hallways to measure distance), patient handouts translated into multiple languages, and training and documentation processes for care teams to record a patient’s progress in the electronic medical record.
