Health & Wellness Design Awards 2025
Cary Pediatric Dentistry is a trusted provider of specialized oral healthcare for children, supporting patients and families through every stage of their dental journey. Recognizing that many children arrive with emotions of fear, anxiety, or nervousness, the practice challenged Studio 310 to create an environment that eases those emotions and allows the doctors to focus on delivering top-tier patient care. The project was shaped through the integration of architecture, interiors, and experience design. Each discipline informed the other, ensuring the final environment is both operationally clear and emotionally resonant. Through immersive placemaking, the design introduces a playful yet calming experience. Vibrant colors, custom dimensional installations, and full-wall graphics rooted in a modern jungle theme bring a positive distraction during moments of heightened stress. Each touchpoint within the public spaces was thoughtfully created to transform their dental visit into an uplifting experience. Patients are first welcomed by a large tree sculpture, crafted by a local artist, in the waiting area. Comfortable seating is oriented toward a feature wall that combines expansive graphics with digital screens offering a variety of gaming options. In the open treatment bay, visitors are greeted by a colorful flock of three-dimensional birds suspended overhead. From the dental chair, children can choose to focus on the birds as a stationary, calming focal point, or watch selected programming on nearby digital screens. At the end of each visit, children celebrate by adding their names to a magnetic wall of hand-drawn jungle graphics. Using playful magnets, they proudly leave their mark as part of a growing mural that reflects the community of patients. Here, experience design is not applied after the fact but is woven into the design process, shaping both the environment and the way it is experienced. This integration transforms a traditionally stressful setting into a place where children connect dental health with discovery and delight, an outcome as vital to the practice’s mission as the clinical treatment itself.
