The 2022 American Package Design Awards drew 341 winners, and the biggest block came off the grocery shelf: 111 food and beverage entries, more than any other sector. Type did the heavy lifting. Eleven's Eucerin Sun packaging and Gatto Rivera's Six Figures merlot label both trust clean letterforms to carry the brand, and 168 winners overall kept to a minimal kit. The palette ran to classic contrast, white and black with golden yellow and red for heat. At the playful end, Ringling College of Art + Design's Raise the Bar chocolate and Topco's Crav'n Flavor frozen novelties used fresh greens and warm hues to sell approachability. The through-line of the year: fewer elements, working harder.
