The CalArts Graphic Design Program fosters the next generation of graphic designers through rigorous inquiry, fearless exploration, and innovative making. Students develop formal and critical thinking skills to establish their own unique approaches and individual perspectives with the support of faculty and the studio community.
The Graphic Design curriculum integrates the Institute’s critical approach, placing practice within the context of history, theory, interdisciplinarity, and broader cultures. Graphic design classes are small, intimate, and critique-driven. Studio and lecture courses include print, web, UI/UX, motion, typography, branding, history, and theory. Graduates are prepared for design careers and opportunities in professional, independent, and entrepreneurial pursuits.
Graphic Design students work in year-level studios where individual and collaborative learning is encouraged. This dynamic environment includes art and media labs, galleries, the library, performance spaces, the cafe, outdoor spaces, and proximity to the five other schools.
