California College of the Arts (CCA), founded in 1907, is an art and design college in the San Francisco Bay Area known for preparing students to influence culture through creative work. With a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs, the college emphasizes hands-on learning, collaboration, and social and environmental responsibility. Its location offers students access to a dynamic community of artists, designers, and industry professionals.
CCA’s BFA in Communication Design empowers students to shape cultural conversations through thoughtful visual language. Building on CCA’s hands-on, socially minded ethos, the program teaches how design can inform experience and spark change. Through a carefully woven curriculum of typography, image-making, interaction, and systems thinking, students develop both conceptual insight and aesthetic skill. They experiment across analog and digital platforms, from letterpress and risograph to motion design, AR/VR, and data visualization, moving through foundational studios into advanced coursework. The journey culminates in a self-directed senior thesis, resulting in a distinctive portfolio grounded in purpose, creativity, and innovation.
