Savey: Food Waste App In Grocery Store

Savey is a mobile grocery app that helps reduce food waste by turning discounted, near-expiry products into trusted food rescue. The idea began with a real-world observation. While traveling in Indonesia, I saw grocery stores clearly separating and discounting near-expiry food as a normal and transparent way to prevent waste. In the U.S., however, shoppers often avoid discounted items—even when they are safe—because they worry about freshness and quality. Research through market analysis, store observation, and user interviews revealed a clear tension: people want to save money, but they hesitate when information feels unclear. Three main problems emerged: low visibility of discounted food, negative perceptions of near-expiry items, and lack of trust due to poor labeling. Savey solves this through three core design principles: visibility, clarity, and confidence. Rescued food is easy to find. Expiration dates and product details are clearly shown. Store verification badges, reviews, and impact tracking build trust. A rewards system encourages positive behavior and helps users see how much food and money they’ve saved. The app supports the full journey—from discovery to checkout to impact tracking—making discounted food feel safe, smart, and intentional. User testing showed increased confidence in buying near-expiry products and stronger emotional engagement with food rescue. By combining savings for shoppers with waste reduction for stores, Savey reframes discounted groceries as a responsible and empowering choice.
