Pixelated Pearl Children's Book Illustration & Design

'Pixelated Pearl: A Proudly Nerdy, Joyously Girly Story' is a children’s book about a Filipino-American tween girl who's learning that being proudly nerdy AND joyously girly isn't a contradiction—it's her spark. Pearl is a girl who loves pink and pixels, but even with all of the support from her friends and family, she still feels self-conscious about being both nerdy and girly. Our book emphasizes the message that kids can - and should - follow their nerdy and girly passions without feeling embarrassed. We want to show young girls that being passionate about “nerdy” things isn’t just for boys—it’s for anyone with imagination and a sense of wonder. Our hope is that this book will emphasize the message that kids can - and should - follow their nerdy and girly passions without feeling embarrassed. We cheer on kids’ passions about their multifaceted interests so they feel confident and forever curious, stoking a lifelong love of learning. Starting with pen-to-paper sketches in a dummy book and later evolving to iPad, ‘Pixelated Pearl’ features hand-drawn illustrations and original hand lettering. We also created Pearl to be a fashionable and STEAM-loving Filipino American tween with a diverse group of friends in a vibrant and colorful environment. We launched the book in Kickstarter, where it got fully funded in 3 days and was deemed Project We Love by Kickstarter. Our goal is to connect with kids and educators through schools, community centers, third spaces, libraries, and museums.
