American Graphic Design Awards 2025
A unique blend of modern and vintage design brings iconic coastal locations to life in this authentic poster collection.
Great American Coastal Icons™ Poster Collection: I love our American coastline. Wanted to design something unique in the coastal/retail/art marketplace. So started to work on series of posters to utilize many of the photos of iconic places I've visited over my long career. I've been a designer -- objectively working for my clients. Now it is my turn -- to be my own client and subjectively create some art of my own ... I have hundreds of 'iconic' photos, so the collection can keep growing for years ... The design concept is sort of modern take / vintage-look on Craftsman-style art (the turn-of-the-century to maybe the 30s). One of my favorite art/design genres. A good number of lighthouses, for example, were built in this time period when Arts and Crafts -style art, furniture and homes were in vogue. But today the style is even more popular than it was "back in the day"... Another difference, and uniqueness, is that my posters are all photo-based, not crudely hand-painted or digitally altered to look like poor imitations of vintage travel posters-- like many on the market today. Rather, they are authentic, true actual photos taken at subject locations by the designer. Perhaps with a bit of enhancement of style or color, or to add drama to a cloudless sky. Unique old paper overlays are added in Photoshop to give a vintage look. No generic replicating of subject elements with interchangeable 'drop-in' location names. My posters are all 100% true and unique to the exact location where they were photographed. Additionally, to add an historical element to the design, specific subject and location data is added to the images -- date built, GPS location, and other special information relavant to the subject. All designs are sort of similar -- but not the same"of a piece." I chose Farrier font, because it lends itself very well to modification. The style fits the era, it can be used U&lc or all caps, and can be altered either vertically or horizontally, and still look appropriate for the overall imagery. It's a fun project. I can work on for years ...
