Design briefing

The East Otay Mesa Recycling & Landfill Facility, approved by 84% of San Diego County voters in June 2010, was designed to uphold California’s rigorous environmental standards. Our creative team was tasked with designing social media banners to educate the public and celebrate the facility as a safe, voter-approved recycling hub. Central to our creative approach was the infusion of vibrant color and dynamic visuals to effectively communicate messages about environmental responsibility and civic pride. The banners were crafted to be visually striking, ensuring they would capture attention in busy digital spaces while also conveying a meaningful narrative. Among the campaign’s standout design elements was a memorable illustration of a whale constructed entirely from trash, plastic, and other pollutants. This clever visual metaphor highlighted the consequences of waste on marine life and underscored the facility’s mission to address such issues through responsible recycling. Complementing this, the banners featured stunning photography of San Diego County’s southern landscapes, including sunlit hills, coastal views, and diverse wildlife. These images helped root the campaign in the local community, visually expressing what the recycling and landfill facility was working to protect. Bold, eco-inspired color palettes and modern, clean typography further reinforced the campaign’s themes of sustainability and clarity. Each banner included concise, persuasive messaging aligned with the campaign’s priorities. Statements such as “84% of San Diego County Voters approved this project in June 2010,” “Designed in full compliance with California’s strict environmental laws,” “Environmentally Safe! An Eco recycling hub for San Diego County,” and “A voter-approved solution for our recycling and waste management” emphasized the facility’s strengths and community support. The campaign successfully increased public awareness of the facility’s environmental credentials and broad voter backing. The trash whale illustration prompted valuable discussions about recycling, while the vibrant photography fostered community pride. Ultimately, the East Otay Mesa Recycling & Landfill Facility was positioned as both a practical solution and a symbol of regional environmental stewardship. Through its colorful design and compelling storytelling, the East Otay Mesa social media banner campaign brought the facility’s environmental mission to life, engaging and informing residents throughout San Diego County.
