The Story
Tonia Yuqi Zhang designed a poster for an artist talk featuring Brian Oakes, an interdisciplinary sculptor known for his blend of technocraft and DIY materiality. The poster aimed to reflect Oakes' experimental practice while clearly presenting event details to the RISD and Providence community. Zhang's design process involved researching Oakes' intricate sculptures and exploring typographic directions. Ultimately, she chose the Literata font, manipulating typography to create a dynamic visual rhythm that complemented Oakes' work. The final result was a poster that not only captured the essence of Oakes' artistry but also attracted a large audience, receiving positive feedback for its clarity and visual impact.
